After his parents lost everything, he was unable to complete his studies and earned his living as a journalist for Le Figaro. He then wrote two or three plays and began to be recognized in literary circles as a man of quality and promise.

He is remembered for his humorous and sentimental descriptions of life and characters in the South of France, inspired by his experiences.

 

For a long time, his health was undermined by venereal disease... which cost him his life.
