The Famous French Collection

Napoleon III spent years exiled in London. He came back with an idea: Paris should be able to compete with the city that had once jailed his uncle.

He handed the job to Baron Haussmann. Wide boulevards, uniform façades, parks, sewers, an entire capital rebuilt from the ground up. Critics called it reckless spending. Haussmann didn't slow down.

The Paris everyone photographs today is still, largely, his.
